| 内容記述 | 本稿の目的は, マーシャル (Alfred Marshall, 1842-1924)の進化論的経済学において, 人間の性格(character)を幸福あるいは貧困の非物的源泉と見なすこと, この性格の高級化の困難さで経済進歩が困難であることを示した。この議論は以下のようである。経済進歩は, 人間の幸福な状態の持続とすれば, 人間の性格の高級化を求める。この最高級化の段階は, 性格の段階的変化において, 芸術的性格と卓越の活動との結合を求める。この段階で道徳的性格は高級化の段階の中間段階に位置するが, この中間段階よりも前の段階では, 人々が貧困に導かれやすい傾向をもち, この後の段階では幸福に導かれやすい傾向をもつのである。われわれは, 人々のこの生活状態の特徴を, 幸福と貧困の対置的性質とよんだ。 （英文） This paper looks at the following two points in evolutionary economics as proposed by Alfred Marshall (1842-1924): firstly, that human character, not material things, is the source of happiness or poverty; and secondly, that the speed of the step-by-step change in human character drives economic progress. The discussion in this paper is developed as follows: on one side, economic progress is the lasting element creating happiness for people, it requires a step-by-step upgrading of human character. On the other side, economic decline is the lasting element driving people into poverty, and this brings about the step-by-step degrading of human character. Finally, we have found that, on an analogy with biological step-by-step upgrading, moral character is at the intermediate step and this type of upgrading is slow. Control over human character development is very difficult. This slowness and difficulty create serious barriers to economic progress. | |||||||||
