A dataset of 150 English learners was compared to that of English native speakers using the learner corpora ICNALE (International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English) and NICER (Nagoya Interlanguage Corpus of English Reborn). Key overused words showed that English learners tend to overuse personal pronouns, basic verbs, and nouns describing familiar existence such as “mother” and “friend.” Further analysis based on their proficiency levels revealed that the level of lexical variety in the essays was higher in high proficiency learners. Proficient learners were characterized by the overuse of “we” rather than the third person such as “he” or “she,” and the underuse of basic verbs and nouns describing familiar existence.
