内容記述 | The main purpose of this paper is to examine possible influences of William Frend and Joseph Priestley upon Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Coleridge was born and raised Anglican; however, he went deeply into Unitarianism after he entered Jesus College at Cambridge University. It will be pointed out that, in the midst of the ideological conflict after the outbreak of the French Revolution, he seems to have been influenced by some nonconformist and liberal figures around him, including Frend, and by such atmosphere at Jesus College at that time. In addition, Coleridge seems to have been influenced by Priestley’s Unitarian thoughts, too, for Coleridge’s attitude to Orthodoxy is quite similar to Priestley’s. He revered the clergyman, philosopher and chemist so much that he composed a sonnet dedicated to him. The last part of this paper examines some excerpts from Biographia Literaria, an autobiography by Coleridge, in order to find out how and when he began to believe in Unitarianism, and why he eventually departed from it. It will also be pointed out that, after struggling to understand Christianity in his own way, he found his own answer. |
