| 内容記述 | [Abstract] In negative sentences, indefinite noun phrases can be replaced with any N without changing the meaning unless they appear in the subject position. For example, the sentences I don't have a cat and I don't have any cat convey the same meaning that there is no cat that "I" have. When any N is used as a copula complement, this type of a paraphrase will no longer be available. The sentences John is not a doctor and John is not any doctor do not have the same meaning unlike the first pair of sentences. The latter with any doctor has the interpretation that John is a special doctor, which does not deny that John is a doctor. It is not obvious how this construal is available. In this paper, we show that when contrastive negation operates on any, the focus is on the distinctive semantic feature of any, called "widening." The inverse effect of contrastive negation gives rise to a "narrowing —d own" of domains of individuals. This yields the semantic representation of the sentence in question, which says that in every smaller, or more central, domain of individuals than the one given from the context, there is an individual called John who is a doctor. This semantic representation makes it possible for the sentence to have the interpretation that John is a special doctor. | |||||||||
