| 内容記述 | [要旨]本稿は，２０世紀初頭に馬車に代わって台頭した新たな交通手段を提供する乗り物としての自動車を，ジェンダー・イメージという角度から考察することを目的としている。手順としては，まず，２０世紀初頭の自動車と比較する意味で，私的移動手段として１９世紀まで一般的だった「馬車」について，主に形状にみる御者とそれ以外の乗客の関係を階級の面から考察する。馬車はその後，動力源を化石燃料に変えて自動車となり，デザインも変化していくが，その過程で馬車と用途の面でそれほど変わらないはずの自動車にジェンダー・イメージが付与された点を，当時，女性レーシングドライバーとして活躍したドロシー・レヴィットの著書を読み直しながら，２０世紀初頭における自動車と女性の関係を考察する。 [Abstract] This paper discusses how automobiles were perceived in terms of gender perspectives in the early 20th century. Traditionally, in the patriarchal order, women were excluded from the field of industrial technology, where only men were considered to be able to manage and deal with machines, including automobiles. When Dorothy Levitt became the idol of the car-racing world, her expected gender role was to assimilate her feminine beauty with the car she drove, so as to attract potential male buyers. However, while many were aware of her popularity based on femininity, Levitt, by writing a manual book for the potential female driver, insisted that women should also learn to drive themselves to have autonomy in mobility. |
