| 内容記述 | [概要] 本稿では, 19世紀イギリスにおいて活躍した女性文筆家,ハリエット・マーティノーが挑んだ最初の小説Deerbrookについて, イギリス家庭小説の系譜の中に入れてその内容を他の作品と比較検討している。Deerbrookは, ジェイン・オースティンの小説でもしばしば描かれる, いわゆる「姉妹もの」をプロットの中核にすえて物語が発展していく形をとるが, この小説のオリジナリティは, 姉妹の恋愛と結婚を描きながらも, 実のところ, 姉妹の相互依存と困難の克服を経て独立する過程にあることを本論では検証している。 [Abstract] This paper focuses on Harriet Martineau's first novel, Deerbrook, among the family novels of the nineteenth century England. Following the tradition of the contemporary novels, Deerbrook deals with two sisters' love romance and marriage, which is placed at the center of the story. Martineau's originality lies in the fact that she emphasizes the process of the two sisters' becoming independent, overcoming their difficulties and interdependent status in marriage life, rather than romantic episodes and plots of how they find their real love. |
