Although many studies have been conducted on Wordsworth’s Romantic poetry, which has been both popularly and critically acclaimed, less attention has been paid to his ardent attempt at translating the classical verse he so adored. Accordingly, in the treatise, an attempt has been made to translate the Wordsworth’s Aeneid I (I.1-63)into Japanese. This includes not only the Japanese translation but also some commentary on the work. These commentaries mainly include analyses of vital keywords or concepts within the work, such as pietas and fatum/fata. As his literary friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge had anticipated, the course of this attempt did not run smooth. Wordsworth’s determination to convey both the meaning and euphony of Virgil’s passages more faithfully than ever ― in order to reproduce the pleasing experience of appreciating the world and words of the Latin workin English ― caused him to struggle and be perplexed by the tension between preserving the exactness of the content and simulating the form, as well as to realize the still further difficulty of rendering them aesthetically pleasing. He also fell into a contradiction by excessively adopting phrases from previous translators such as John Dryden and Christopher Pitt, while expressing the strong urge to exceed their translations by aiming for originality. Yet, in his struggle to produce the translation, we can still trace his own poetic talent and ingenuity.
