Ammonium sulfate labelled with ^<15>N was used as top-dressed at one of four different times (spaced at five-day intervals) between 10 days before and 5 days after heading. In all plots, the total dry weight and nitrogen content increased as top-dressing was delayed. ^<15>N uptake increased as top-dressing was delayed; uptake was highest when the application was at 5 days after heading.
