The putative gene (s) that specifies the short life span does not seem a house-keeping gene. Assuming that life span-related changes occur in the prevalence of particular mRNAs.a differntial hybridization screening was carried out to clone genes that are preferentially expressed in either young cells of stock 51 or cells of d4-SL4. In this screening, a pool of single-stranded cDNA from one stock was subtracted with excess amount of mRNA from the other stock through a hybridization procedure and then cDNAs which escaped the hybridization were recovered. A total of five cDNA clones synthesized differentially between the two cell types were isolated and they were independent of the growth state. Of the five genes, two and three were expressed preferentially in young stock 51 and d4-SL4, respectively.
