We examined the relationship between the antimutagenicity of aloe-emodin and its derivatives by a modification of the Ames test. All but anthraquinone itself could inhibit frameshift mutation by at least 80% if the amount used was at least 10^<-3> mol/plate, but the numbers of revertant colonies was almost unchanged at this dose. The pattern of inhibition suggested that substitutions such as hydroxyl and hydroxymethyl groups on aromatic rings were important for the activity.
