内容記述 | [Abstract] Although it has been shown that the human visual system has neural mechanisms specific to rapid face perception, humans often incorrectly perceive a face in a pattern that is not a face. This phenomenon is termed face pareidolia. Previous studies have shown that the global configuration of parts such as eyes, nose, and mouth is critical for face perception, and in the simplest case of face pareidolia, an image consisting of three dots arranged in an inverted invisible triangle (e.g., “∵”) tends to be automatically recognized as a face. The purpose of this study was to clarify the spatial factors involved in judging the face-likeness of the image with three dots arranged in the inverted invisible triangle. A total of 27 different images of the three dots were created by manipulating the distance between the top two dots, the distance between the bottom dot and the edge of the top two dots, and the horizontal position of the bottom dot. Participants were required to conduct face-likeness rating for these images by pairwise comparison. The rating data were converted into similarity data, and the similarity space was derived by a multidimensional scaling (MDS). The MDS analysis yielded the similarity space determined by three dimensions, two of which could be interpreted as factors of the distance between the eyes and the distance between the eyes and mouth. These factors are considered to be related to the formation of the face prototype, which is consistent with the prototype hypothesis that faces are encoded in a multidimensional space based on an individual’s face prototype (Valentine & Bruce, 1986). | |||||||||
