内容記述 | [Abstract] Though being a teacher has always been held in high regards in Japan, recently the teaching profession has been criticized for overburdening teachers. The media has suggested this has caused many problems in classrooms and pushed teachers to retire early. Even young teachers, after only after a few years in the profession, decide to quit. Having a job where you get to spend it interacting with young children might sound fun to some people. However, what exactly does the average elementary school teacher do in Japan ? Do they really work long hours, and if so, is it worth it ? Is it as stressful as it is portrayed in the media for all teachers ? The purpose of this qualitative study was to record what an average day looks like for an elementary school teacher. In order to do that I spent a day with an elementary school teacher and observed and took detailed fieldnotes of them at work. Afterwards, I interviewed the teacher to discuss what I saw in class and ask about contextual factors of the school and what it means, for him, to be a teacher in the public school system. | |||||||
