In response to the development of Sound Studies in English-speaking countries, historical research into audio media, including recording technology, has been gaining momentum in Japan in recent years. Rather than audio media being viewed as “music device” exclusively, a series of discussions that attempt to see it as a historical form linked to science and philosophy, and to the transformation of human sensibilities and bodily views, have important implications that can also be linked to Visual Culture Studies, which is also experiencing remarkable development.
