The author focuses on the metonymic use of language in the text as it effectively reveals the relationship between the British Empire and the colonialized. As Roman Jakobson pointed out, metonymy depends on contiguity, and in this novel, the representation of the six characters depends on the relations and differences among them. The paper argues that the identification of Louis with the colony, in a marked contrast to the other English characters, allows us to read the text as a part of the imperial narrative, which as Edward Said observed, was used to create and sustain the Empire’s tradition and culture.
