In the former case, learners were allowed to use dictionaries and other reference materials, while learners in the latter case improvised. We compared the results with findings from the large learner corpora, such as ICNALE and NICER, and found that essays without advance preparation that used similar datacollection factors as the large learner corpora contained more commonly overused words. The same results were obtained in the proficiency-based analysis.
