| 内容記述 | ［Abstract］George Orwellʼs second novel, A Clergymanʼs Daughter, has been negatively criticised.This is partly because of Orwellʼs own dissatisfaction with it as well as the structural defects pointed out by various critics. For this reason, the novelʼs main theme, the loss of faith, is generally overlooked. The purpose of this paper is to recognise the importance of the theme for Orwell and revalue the novel. In this paper, we will reconfirm the main theme of this book, and carefully consider the protagonist, Dorothyʼs mind. Through this, we find that the keyword is ‘accept’. The paper then compares the theme or style of the novel with that of American writer Henry Miller, who was actively writing in the 1930s. Finally, the paper discusses the link between A Clergymanʼs Daughter and Orwellʼs last novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. | |||||||||
