内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 [Abstract] Nobody can really understand the meanings of words in certain culturally specific domain if they do not understand some social institutions, and some history of social practices, against which these words are interpreted. The Japanese words sontaku (roughly, surmise) and haragei (literally, belly art) are examples of those culturally specific concepts. In fact sontaku drew public attention over a political scandal in 2017 when at a foreign press conference, the word was used by a witness and mistranslated, causing confusion. The interpreter admitted “there is no one direct word in English which is what lead to this.” For clarifying meanings of these untranslatable words, a frame semantic approach is useful. By defining frame elements and relations between them and also by identifying cultural practices, we can have a clear understanding of the words in a specific semantic domain. This research sheds a new light on the method of rendering culturally specific untranslatable concepts exemplified by sontaku and haragei more transparent by drawing on frame semantics.
