| 内容記述 | [Abstract]Research has shown a wide variability in the contacts learners establish during their study abroad, along with their language development (Kinginger, 2009). This study draws on the theoretical concepts of language socialization and individual networks of practice (INoPs) to interpret data of a Japanese university student learning both English and Mandarin Chinese while studying in Taiwan. The main data source was semi-structured interviews conducted thrice during the student’s 10-month study abroad and a “friendship network grid” (Hendrickson, Rosen, & Anue, 2010).The data were used for constructing three INoPs, with descriptions of the student’s experiences from the language socialization perspective. The results show the changes in the INoPs, and how the student was able to gain both academic and affective returns from ties developed with peers of similar backgrounds, especially with a group of students from Thailand. Another vital relationship was that with her “language buddy,” a local Taiwanese student who met with her once a week. This study also discusses the unique difficulties of studying abroad where two target languages are involved, along with suggestions for future study abroad programs. | |||||||||
