内容記述 | [Abstract] The N in the [Det kind of N] construction lacks an article in most cases, but occasionally the indefinite article precedes it especially in data of spoken English with one of several kinds of determiners in the Det slot. Drawing upon the proposal by Margerie (2010) that the grammaticalization of the construction gave rise to the appearance of the indefinite article for the N, the present article investigates the frequencies of quotations including this construction cited in the OED to examine if diachronic advancements of grammaticalization of the construction parallel the appearance of the indefinite article for the N. The collected data seems to support the projected correlation, but also seems to pose further diachronic questions. A semantic distinction between the usages with and without the indefinite article is proposed as a possible solution to those questions. | |||||||||
