| 内容記述 | [Abstract]This paper discusses the function and the significance of the letters in Thomas Hardy’s last novel, Jude the Obscure （1895）. The text opens with a passage from 2 Corinthians, “The letter killeth,” and many studies have stressed on its religious significance, especially in terms of the Marriage Law in the Victorian England. Meanwhile, my paper focuses on the introduction of the Penny Post in 1840, which greatly affected the social as well as human relationships of the late nineteenth-century England. In the first part of the paper, I briefly go over the changes in the British society after the Penny Post. Then, after referring to the letters that appear in Hardy’s other novels, I examine the crucial roles the letters play in the tragic narrative of Jude. Lastly, I explore the significance of the letters in Hardy’s career as a novelist. | |||||||||
