| 内容記述 | In this paper, we offer a critical examination of recent notable research on the denominal caritive adjectival morphemes in English: -less and -free. Kikuchi (2020), based on corpus data, characterizes the meanings of N-less X and N-free X in terms of “potential production” and “intentional removal,” respectively. However, substantial counterexamples challenge their empirical validity. Aronoff (2020), meanwhile, investigates usage patterns of -less and -free under the hypotheses that they coexist in the form of “competitive exclusion” and that -free has shifted from a compound-final element to a full-fledged suffix. Yet, his assumption about desirability requires revision, and his conclusion that N-free adjectives always express positively evaluated absence is incompatible with linguistic evidence. Responding to these issues, the present article advances a usage-based account that emphasizes the importance of lower-level schemas. It further explains the semantics of -less and -free as absence construed through comparison between baseline and target concepts. These insights encourage morphology to embrace the flexible and cognitively motivated nature of language use rather than invoke abstract rules. | |||||||||
