| 内容記述 | 本研究課題は、植民地インド出身の商業諸集団が、東アフリカから東南アジアにまたがる広域経済圏において活発な経済活動を展開したことを踏まえて、彼らの拠点が置かれた港市におけるさまざまな用途の建造物（寺院建築、商業建築、住居建築）が、出身地域の伝統と進出先の新たな要素をいかに融合させながら独自のアイデンティティを構築したのかを、特に建築装飾の細部分析を通して実証することを目指した。この目的において、シンガポール国立大学を受入研究機関とし、建築図面、写真アーカイブ、植民地政府年次報告書などの資料調査と、シンガポール、インドなどでの実地調査を行い、インド系の移住商人コミュニティに共通の美意識を抽出した。 | |||||||||

| 内容記述 | This research project aimed at analyzing architectural decorative elements of Indian mercantile architecture scattered over the Indian Oceanic world under British rule, to examine how Indian business communities formulated their cultural identities through visual representations reflected in their community buildings such as temples, mosques, shophouses, and residential mansions. For this purpose, I was accepted as visiting scholar at the National University of Singapore for six months to conduct archival research on architectural plans, photographic archives, annual reports of the colonial government, and trade statistics of the Straits Settlement, as well as to conduct field work on architectural heritage of mercantile communities in colonial Singapore to compare their usage of architectural materials such as tiles and terracotta. The project revealed the commonalities and differences of aestheticism of Indian mercantile communities reflected particularly in tiles. | |||||||||
