One hundred and forty-five patients with carcinoma of the esophagus were treated in our clinic. Of the 145 patients, resection of esophageal carcinoma was performed in 97 (66.9%). Forty of the 97 patients (41.2%) were diagnosed histologically as stage IV. Thirteen of these 40 patients (32.5%) were diagnosed as a3, 19 (47.5%) as n3 or n4, 6 (15.0%) as a3 plus n3 or n4, 1 (2.5%) as pl1 and another case (2.5%) as m1. The over-all survival rate of the stage VI patients was 35 per cent at one year after operation, 14 per cent at two years and 7 per cent at three years. Comparing the survival rate between a3 and A3 (non-resected cases), it was significantly better in a3 than in A3 patients. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in survival rates between patients with a3 and with n3 or n4, or between patients with and without radiotherapy. |
