Morphological observation of the myoepithelial cells and the basement membrane was performed both in the benign and the malignant condition by the routine histopathological and the immunohistochemical method. In the benign condition, the myoepithelial cells were always accompanied by the basement membrane. The basement membrane elongated to form a complex figure as the myoepithelial cells proliferated. In the malignant condition, neither the myoepithelial cells nor the basement membrane could be found in the lesion except in non-invasive ductal carcinoma. In the non-invasive ductal carcinoma, partially defected myoepithelial cells and discontinuity of the basement membrane could be found. These findings showed that there were large morphological differences in the two structures between the benign and the malignant condition. The authors' study could be easily applied to routine pathology and become an aid in the diagnosis. |
