Burst activities that appeared in EEG at the frontal region were analyzed in 23 female SD rats treated with 100-210 mg/kg ketamine hydrochloride. EEG was performed using small clip electrodes transcutaneously applied to the frontal, parietal and occipital regions. The incidences and duration of the burst were generally dependent on the applied dose. In lightly anesthetized preparations, the burst consisted of several to ten periodic cycles of the positive slow wave and the superposing negative spike waves. Within a burst, the cycle duration gradually increased with phase shifting of superposing spike wave to the slow wave cycle. The amplitude of the slow wave and the superposing spike wave changed parallel to the cycle. Immediately before the termination of the burst, both the amplitudes of the slow and spike waves reached their acmes. This effect indicated the presence of the resetting mechanism concerning potential synchronization in forming the slow wave cycles in the burst. |
