The authors examined the effect of endotoxin on some biochemical and biophysical properties of alveolar surfactant from intact and siolated rabbit lungs. Endotoxin treatment decreased the levels of choline-contaning and the total phospholipids but increased those of phosphatidylserine and 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5,-hexatriene, as a fluorescent marker, indicating that endotoxin treatment decreased the structural order of the phospholipid molecules forming the alveolar surfactant monolayer. |
