A case of hysterical overlaying is reported. The patient was a 51-year-old Asian female with the onset of hysterical symptoms, such as astasia and abasia, following steroid therapy for polymyositis. Through this case, the psychological mechanism of hysterical overlay and the mental symptoms induced by steroid therapy are discussed. The former is that the anxiety concerning polymyositis alternated with hysterical symptoms arising from the premorbid personality through the psychological mechanism of "flight into disease". The latter is that steroid therapy increases the risks of mental disorders, manifesting in so-called "exogenous reaction types". |
