We retrospectively investigated the efficacy and incidence of side effects from continuous epidural infusion of morphine for postoperative pain in 120 patients who had undergone abdominal surgery. To relieve postoperative pain, a bolus of 2 mg epidural morphine and 2.5 mg droperidol were administered by an epidural catheter at least 2 hr before the end of surgery. This was followed with a continuous epidural infusion of morphine using a pump at a rate of 0.1-0.13 mg/h. Seventy percent of the patients had complete relief of incisional pain with the epidural morphine alone. The most common side effects were hypotension and nausea or vomiting, but respiratory depression or other major complication are possible. Continuous epidural infusion of morphine provided effective pain relief with a low incidence of side effects. |
