Serum erythropoietin (EPO) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in 14 patients receiving allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Ten patients had acute and chronic leukemia and 4 patients had severe aplastic anemia (SAA). Serum EPO levels before BMT were slightly higher in the patients with leukemia than those in healthy individuals. The mean EPO levels were markedly elevated and reached the highest level at 1 week post-BMT, gradually normalizing thereafter. A significant correlation was shown between serum EPO levels, percentage reticulocytes and hematocrit. The influence of ABO major incompatibility cases continued to elevate serum EPO levels, but ABO minor incompatibility cases changed serum EPO levels as occurs in general cases. EPO levels increased in relapsed cases. In patients with SAA, serum EPO levels before the conditioning regimen were highest before and after BMT and gradually normalized thereafter. EPO levels were elevated in patients showing failure of engraftment. It is suggested that serum EPO levels are elevated in relasped cases with leukemia and in graft failure cases with SAA. |
