Fifty percent methanol extracts of Gaiyo, Ogi, Zentai, Hishi and Biwayo possessing anti-degranulation activities on the mast cells were examined for anti-allergic effects in guinea pigs with nasal allergy. Each of the symptom scores for the nasal allergy and histamine contents in the nasal mucosa of guinea pigs after provocation of ovalbumin (antigen) was compared to the crude drug treated animals. The nasal allergic scores were significantly decreased by Gaiyo, Ogi, Biwayo, Zentai and Hishi extracts in descending order. The histamine content in the nasal mucosa was markedly inhibited by Gaiyo, Ogi and Biwayo extracts. These findings indicated that these 5 traditional crude drugs possessed very strong anti-allergic actions not only in in vitro, but also in in vivo experiment. |
