The human intestinal microbial flora is necessary for maintaining health. In the normal state, the balance of the intestinal microorganisms is maintained by self control. However, oral antibiotic administration disturbs this balance. In this study, we evaluated fecal specimens from antibiotic-treated inpatients. Enterococcus spp. was isolated from 47.4% of fecal specimens showing abnormal intestinal flora. This microorganism show intrinsic resistance to cephalosporins, penicillinase-resistant penicillin, and aminoglycosides (low concentration). Therefore, the high detection rate of this species suggests progression of selection. The major isolated microorganisms were, in the order of decreasing frequency : C. albicans, P. aeruginosa, MRSA, and C. glablata. These findings suggested selection of and microbial substitution with multiple drug resistant bacteria and Candidas in the intestinal tract. When antibiotics are used for a long period, regular examination of the intestinal microbial flora is necessary. |
