Changes with aging in the thyroid cartilages, which were collected from 501 males and 513 females in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, were quantitatively measured using an applied image processing technique. Sexual differences were found in these aging changes. Selected indices for the changes were ossification rate (OSFR) and gray level difference statistics secondary moment based on gray level difference statistics (GLDM). Ultra-soft radiographs of the thyroid cartilages were taken using a black and white TV camera, and input to an image processing apparatus, and the concerned index was measured. The conditions of the changes were non-linear in males and linear in females. The varaiation of OSFR and GLDM are approximated by mathematical functions. Therefor the age at death can be estimated by measuring OSFR or GLDM. The results of estimation were around sixty to seventy percent accuracy in age range of ±8 years. The OSFR and GLDM levels were twice as high in males than in females. Thus, there is an apparent difference in the changes in the thyroid cartilages between Japanese males and females. |
