We examined the effects of seat belts among 155 patients who were treated for injuries caused by motor vehicle traffic accidents between November 1,1983 and October 31,1989. All of the 155 patients were either drivers or front-seat passengers, and there were 65 patients in the unbelted group and 90 in the belted group with a lap-shoulder belt. There were no differences in the age, gender or the factors involved in the accident between the two groups. In terms of bodily injury regions, thoracic injury was found in 12 cases (18.5%) in the unbelted group compared with 30 (33.3%) in the belted group. There were no significant changes in the ISS and mortality between the two groups. However, a difference was observed in the average number of days from the accident until death. It was 7.3 days among the unbelted group compared with 11.6 days for the belted group. Deaths within 24 hours after the accident occurred in 8 cases (72.6%) in the unbelted group and 8 (44.4%) in the belted group. It was clearly found that injured people in the unbelted group died earlier than those in the belted group. This suggests that the rate of fatal injuries was decreased by using a lap-shoulder belt. Moreover, we believe that safety measures such as the installation of an air bag sytem can decrease traumatic injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents. |
