| 内容記述 | There is a consensus that mental competence in particular the ability to handle knowledge, is impaired by schizophrenia. We performed the Sequential-Finger Test consisting of 7 different forms (SFT, a test using the fingers to depict objects in order to excite mental projection) in 123 schizophrenic patients and 145 controls, and rated the subjects on the Scale of the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). In the SFT, significant differences between the two groups were noted in 19 categories out of 28. As a result, the SFT scores correlated with age, duration of illness, and negative symptoms. Impairment regarding the handling of knowledge is in the area of pragmatics in the science of linguistics and belongs to the secondary level of information processing. Impairment was detected through the use of a task which does not designate any particular method of handling tasks but forces subjects to select a common method to handle the task assigned to them. It is considered that the impairment of this ability is closely related to attentional impairment and alogia among the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, and that impairment progresses as duration of the illness is prolonged. | |||||||
