Snowboarders were more likely to injure the upper limb. Wrist fractures and upper extremity soft tissue trauma were common injuries. Bilateral fractures of the scaphoid occur in young adults durling snowboarding, but they are rare. A fall on the outstretched hand generally produces 1 of 3 types of injury depending on age. Children usually sustain distal radial epiphyseal fractures, while older adults sustain Colle's fractures. A fall in young adults is a usually cause of scaphoid fractures through the waist of the bone. In our patient, the Herbert screw provided good stabilization of the reduced bone. We frequently use these screws for fixation of scaphoid fractures in adults because we are familiar with the technique, we have had reproducible results, and the wrist can be mobilized more quickly. |
