内容記述 To clarify the present status and usefulness of the relationship between the departments of plastic surgery and psychiatry, we investigated cases about which the department of plastic surgery was consulted by the psychiatric department. Results : (1) Concerning the consultation, patients associated with wrist cutting were the most frequently discussed. (2) Consultations about the repair of scars were mostly limited to the face. (3) There were few consultations between the departments concerning purely cosmetic surgery. Discussion : (1) Patients at the department of psychiatry was frequently hysteria (dissociative disorder) in consultations about wound treatment due to wrist cutting, and eating disorders, consultations about scar repair after wrist cutting was also frequent. Depression was often observed in consultations about scar repair after wrist cutting but was not observed in consultations about wound treatment due to wrist cutting. These findings could be explained based on the psychopathology of each disorder. (2) The face, on which the eyes of others concentrate, was discussed more often than other parts of the body due to psychological factors. Therefore, plastic surgery can be a measure used to improve both the "body" and "mind". (3) There were no minor deformities dicussed or surgery for purely cosmetic reasons. After surgery, no patients exhibited aggravation of mental symptoms or underwent poly-surgery. Rather, plastic surgery resulted in the removal of the psychological factors that induced mental symptoms in some patients. Further studies of additional cases are necessary.
