内容記述 We evaluated the location and surface structure of gastroliths that form during the pre-molting stage in crayfish by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after infusion of Chinese ink. Infusion of Chinese ink into the heart showed that the blood vessels were distributed over the cephalothoracic region. Among these blood vessels, gastrolith formation was observed in the terminal parts of the branches of the vessel entering the stomach. The area of gastrolith formation was about twice that of the terminal part of this blood vessel entering the stomach. The gastroliths were disc-like, and had numerous conical projections present on the surface. Conical projections in the central area were 50 μm in diameter and 80μm in length, and those in the lateral area were 100 μm in diameter and 150 μm in length. Conical projections in the most lateral area showed multiple micro-projections on their surface. These findings suggest different mechanism of Ca²⁺ secretion and dissolution, which are involved in gastrolith formation and degradation, according to the location. Etching of gastroliths with hydrochloric acid to dissolve calcium carbonate showed crystal accumulation in multiple directions.
