Objective : We carried out a questionnaire survey of 776 healthy females to clarify urinary symptoms and their age-related changes. We also discuss whether urinary symptoms in females can be evaluated qualitatively. Methods : This survey was carried out using the female lower urinary tract symptoms (FLUTS) questionnaire in 776 healthy adult females aged 18-96 years (mean : 43.2 years) who had not been treated for lower urinary tract symptoms. They were divided into three age groups (adult, middle-aged, and elderly) and were investigated. Results : Among the items in the FLUTS questionnaire, 20 items related to urinary symptoms (Q1-Q20) and one item related to quality of life (QOL) (Q30) were selected. Scores were assigned to the urinary symptoms to clarify their age-related changes and influence on QOL. As a result, age-related changes were noted for items 1,2,4,6,9,16,and 33. These items also had a marked influence on QOL. Conclusion : The results of the questionnaire survey showed that there was a large number of healthy females whose QOL was impaired by irritable bladder as well as urinary incontinence. These findings were considered to be important for establishing a questionnaire to evaluate female lower urinary tract symptoms. |
