Background : Although uncemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been used in the treatment of osteoarthritis with successful results, it has not been widely adopted for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Methods : We reviewed 17 patients with 23 primary uncemented THAs with a mean age of 54 years (31 to 60) at the time of surgery. The mean follow-up period was 3 years. All of them underwent THA with autologous cancellous bone graft obtained from the femoral head. Results : Two patients (2 hips) died before the final follow-up. Of the remaining 21 hips, only one cup was revised for aseptic loosening. Excellent bone remodeling was found in the acetabulum. Conclusion : Our findings indicate that excellent mid-term results can be achieved by uncemented THA in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. |
