The effects of the long-term administration of hyaluronic acid were investigated. Changes in radiographic findings and clinical course were analyzed in patients who received hyaluronic acid injections into the knee joint at least 10 times. In addition, the duration and number of hyaluronic acid administrations were retrospectively analyzed in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty or arthroscopic knee joint lavage. Joint destruction advanced in about 10% of patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty and displayed bone necrosis, but no correlation with duration or number of hyaluronic acid administrations was identified. No severe adverse reactions were seen, and the long-term intra-articular administration of hyaluronic acid thus appears to be safe and delays the period of total knee arthroplasty. |
