内容記述 Purpose : To investigate the cerebral cortex area of the secondary olfactory system. Subject and Method : The brain of a healthy, 50-year-old, Asian, right-handed male was measured for oxyHb at the frontal and bilateral temporal lobe by multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) before stimulating the subject's olfactory sense with lemon odor (nonodor). He was then stimulated birhinally using lemon odor at rest (with the eyes closed) and while in an alert state. From the start of odor stimulation, every 30s, the average levels of oxyHb at the frontal and temporal lobes were compared by Student's t-test. Result : The average level of oxy-hemoglobin (oxyHb) of the frontal lobe was significantly higher than that of the right temporal lobe from 60s before to the start of odor stimulation. During the period from 0-90s of stimulation, the average oxyHb level of the frontal lobe was significantly higher than that of the right temporal lobe. Conversely, during the time spanning 90-120s, the average oxyHb level of the left temporal lobe was significantly higher than that of the frontal lobe. During the period of 120-240s, the average oxyHb level of the left temporal lobe was significantly higher than that of both the frontal and right temporal lobes. Conclusion : The primary odor stimulation system activates the frontal lobe, and the secondary odor stimulation system activates the left temporal lobe. It may be suggested that the primary odor stimulation system has a relationship with the frontal lobe and the secondary olfactory system with the left temporal lobe.
