Allergic reactions may occur at any time during anesthesia. We experienced a 28-year-old male patient who developed allergic reactions characterized by cutaneous symptoms and cardiovascular failure. The patient had increased levels of both histamine and tryptase. The allergic reactions were probably due to the prophylactic use of an antibiotic (PentcillinR) during anesthesia. Boluses of epinephrine (0.25mg) were given three times over intermittent intervals until clinical responses were stably managed. He was successfully resuscitated without any sequelae. The patient displayed increases of histamine and tryptase concentrations in blood samples. Anesthesiologists should be aware of possible allergic reactions to all drugs and substances administered during the perioperative period. |
