内容記述 Behavioral evaluations of all hitherto developed methods are based on direct subjective behavioral observations. In the present study, we evaluated the behavioral characteristics of autism (AT) and mental retardation (MR) cases from an objective perspective to impartially differentiate between these 2 groups with actigraphy by monitoring their physical activities. Patients were admitted to a severely mentally handicapped facility with AT (n=10) and MR (n=10). As an activity-monitoring approach, each patient was equipped with a micro-mini type actigraph, and their activities were monitored accordingly. Group comparison based on standard deviations (SD) of the activity of patients revealed that the AT cases significantly displayed movements with less coordination/smoothness than those with MR. Single-patient comparison using actigraphy tracing demonstrated that the AT cases manifested typical erratic behaviors from 11 : 00 h which persisted until recovery at 21 : 00 h. Objective tracing of the actigraphy coincided well with apparent behaviors in both groups. This objective approach, where quantitative differentiations can be established, may be useful for defining AT and MR.
