A 31 year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of bleeding tendency and anemia. Laboratory findings were : Hb 8.1 g/dl, Ht 23.3%, WBC 600/μl (leukemic cells 6.6%). Bone marrow aspiration revealed on NCC of 33.1×10^4/μl with 91.4% leukemic cells. The leukemic cells examined by light microscopy had many azurophilic granules in the cytoplasm. Chromosome analysis of bone marrow cells by G-banding method revealed t (15 ; 17) and near tetraploidy. DNA analysis by flow cytometry also revealed near tetraploidy. The diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia (FAB classification ; M3) was made. Chemotherapy was done, but the patient died. We report this rare case of acute promyelocytic leukemia with tetraploid chromosome, and discuss the mechanism of tetraploid formation. |
