We used HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, Pravastatin for hypercholesterolemia for 12 months and evaluated its effect. Total cholesterol was significantly lowered after a month of treatment and the lower level lasted for 12 months. LDL-cholesterol was more reduced than total cholesterol. On the other hand, HDL-cholesterol tended to rise a month later and was significantly increased after 6 and 12 months. Reduction of LDL-cholesterol was reflected in a marked decrease of apo B. Other apo-lipoproteins showed no significant changes. Triglyceride was not decreased by pravastatin in phenotypes II a and II b. Pravastatin in combination was very effective for most cases of familial hypercholesterolemia for which other drugs had been in-effective. |
