Despite the good clinical results obtained with the current heart preservation techniques, these methods need to be improved. Recently, a lower potassium concentration of cardioplegic solution is used in open heart surgery. However, a high concentration of potassium has been reported to have a good cardioplegic effect at deep hypothemia. In this study, the relationship between the cardioplegic effect and the potassium concentration at various myocardial temperatures has been investigated. Our findings suggested that a high concentration of potassium is detrimental to myocardium at a high temperature, but under 15 degrees centigrade, it has a cardioplegic effect superior to that of a low potassium concentration. |
