To elucidate the vulunerable myocardium of SHRSP, the content of Mn-SOD, an enzyme protecting the cell from reactive free radicals by catalyzing the dismutation, of right or left ventricles in SHRSP, were examined and compared with that in WKY. The Mn-SOD content in the left ventricle in the SHRSP was significantly higher than that in the WKY. Moreover, in SHRSP, the Mn-SOD content in the left ventricle was significantly higher than that in the right ventricle. These findings suggest that the high Mn-SOD content of SHRSP hypertrophied myocardium is due to the increased oxygen stress in the mitochondria. |
