内容記述 | Vocabulary knowledge is important for reading and listening comprehension. Generally, the more unknown words in a passage, the lower the probability of the learner’s understanding. The NGSL, New General Service List (Browne, Culligan, & Phillips, 2013b) corpus, has been developed in part to help learners and researchers understand what kind of words are extant in texts. The NGSL has a first 1,000 band of words, a second 1,000 band, and a third 800 band. Whether these words are known or unknown will influence learner comprehension. The Business Service List, or BSL 1,700 corpus, is composed of common business words (Browne & Culligan, 2016). Similarly, the New Academic Word List, or NAWL 960, has common academic English words (Browne, Culligan, & Phillips, 2013a). This study examined three sets of business English coursebooks, written for learners in the English as a foreign language (EFL) context. Each coursebook’s lower-intermediate and upper-intermediate version was examined and compared for lexical coverage using AntWordProfiler (Anthony, 2022). Most of the words (tokens) in the six coursebooks were drawn from the NGSL first 1,000 words (M=79.11%). A smaller number was found in the NGSL 2nd 1,000 words (M=6.03%). Only a few words (M=1.84%) were drawn from the BSL 1,700. Nevertheless, many lemmas from the NGSL first 1,000 words (M=930) and from the second 1,000 words (M=663) were found. Also, a large coverage difference was found in the BSL 1,700 corpus between the lower and upper intermediate coursebooks (M=261). These findings suggest that learners of business English should become familiar with this list to improve their comprehension. Pedagogical implications for teachers and researchers will be discussed. | |||||||||
