| 内容記述 | 本課題においては、イギリス統治下にあった20世紀前半のインドとセイロン（現スリランカ）において、宗教建築と世俗建築ともにさかんに制作された装飾壁画の主題選択および様式的特徴の歴史的変遷を分析することにより、インドにおいてはヒンドゥー教、セイロンにおいては上座仏教というそれぞれの地域の多数派宗教の視覚表象が、制作当時に興隆した独立運動と結びついて政治的意味を強化していく過程を調査した。とりわけ、植民地経済の発展とともに社会的地位を上昇させた商人階級が施主となった建造物に着目し、政治性を帯びた装飾壁画が施主の政治運動への経済的支援と関連していることを実証的に解明した。 | |||||||||

| 内容記述 | This research project conducted a comparative study on mural paintings on both religious and domestic buildings in colonial India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), focusing on their subject matter and stylistic characteristics that implied religious nationalism in the respective regions - Hinduism in India and Theravada Buddhism in Ceylon. Particularly in the project, build heritage that were patronised by mercantile comminities who rose their social status with great success in the colonial economic system was extensively researched to reveal inteconnections of visual reperesentations, politics, and socio economy in colonial South Asia. As a result, this four-year project revealed that religious nationalism and visual culture both in India and Ceylon were strengthened through mercantile patronisation for art and politics that was reflected in murals. | |||||||||
