We encountered 10 cases of maxillary and facial defect after tumor extirpation which were treated by maxillofacial prostheses including 10 obturating maxillary prostheses and 2 facial prostheses. Recently, the cure rate for head and neck tumors has increased and reconstructive surgery has made rapid progress, but surgery alone is not sufficient for the treatment of patients with maxillofacial defects. Therefore, additional restoration using maxillofacial prosthesis was found to be very useful in improving the patients' quality of life (QOL). We obtained fairly good results in cosmetic and functional restoration using maxillofacial prostheses, including increased intelligibility of the patients' pronunciation in the articulation test. |
